In general, the useful range compromise is 100–150 km for reflectivity. This means for a wavelength of 5 cm (as shown in the diagram), an unambiguous velocity range of 12.5 to 18.75 metre/second is produced (for 150 km and 100 km, respectively).

Lidar uses laser pulses to measure distances and create 3D maps, while radar uses radio waves to detect and track objects. Lidar offers higher spatial resolution and accuracy, while radar provides a longer range and better performance in adverse weather conditions.

The colors are typically a spectrum. The greens indicate light or moderate rainfall. Yellow, orange, and red indicate moderate to heavy rainfall and can also indicate hail. Whites or blues mean snowfall and pink indicates freezing rain, sleet, or a wintry mix.

Range: The optical range of weather radars is limited to 3 -124 miles. This is due to the curvature of the earth. The radar beam travels in a straight line, meaning beyond its max range, it's unable to detect objects close to the surface of the ground.

Yellow and orange colors show moderate-to-heavy precipitation, while red is very heavy rainfall and pink and blue colors inside the red color represent hail of different sizes.

Global models with worldwide weather forecasts

These models are all generally fairly accurate in predicting large scale patterns/features, but all will become less accurate through time. The ECMWF is generally considered to be the most accurate global model, with the US's GFS slightly behind.
